Door Knobs and Broomsticks

I went to Recycle Ann Arbor this past week and found a brand new (for all practical purposes) Bodum Iced Tea pitcher and two sets of old glass door knobs.

My intention this past weekend was to change out two sets of door knobs with these new ones.

The fun of any home project when you don't know what you're doing is learning on the job. Thus far, changing the knobs has been no exception to this heavy dose of learning. Of course, I started by removing the door knob on my door. It was old and a little rusty. I couldn't get the durn thing off. I pulled out my DIY books, I perused the Internet. All seemed to suggest that all I needed to do was to remove the front plates, unscrew two screws and pull.

It turns out that in some older knobs, there also is a spring inside that must be released. After a few tools—screwdriver, narrower screwdriver, metal nail file—I got it off.

Then I found out that I need more hardware: door latches and door knob plates. I purchased a few of the proper inserts from VanDyke's hardware and have a lead on knob plates at Material's Unlimited.

The Internet estimates the time to replace a knob as being 15 minutes. Maybe on a good day.

So, not counting the time to run the hardware store, what was your time?

umm, I'm not done quite yet. Decided to redo the whole door with spackling and paint it before adding the new knobs.

The VanDyke hardware ordered online came in and I found door knob rosettes this weekend at Materials Unlimited, so hardware wise I should be good to go.
