Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's, will visit 6-7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Ann Arbor Scoop Shop at 304 S. State St right by the U-M campus.
Ben and Jerry are perhaps best known for their amazing ice cream and peripherally for their environmental activities.
Consider the following anecdotes from their website to get a better flavor of their commitment to the environment.
The scoop shops opened in Burlington, VT in 1978 in an old gas station. Most of the building's rehabilitation was done with reused materials, such as aluminum sheets from the newspaper used to patch the roof.
In 1985, Ben and Jerry's found a better way to handle its excess ice cream than dumping it. They began "supplying a pig farm in Stowe, Vermont, with ice cream waste." Apparently, pigs are a big fan of ice cream, too.
In 1997 "Phish Food® ice cream is introduced nationally; it’s named after Vermont-based musical group, Phish, who donate royalties from sales of the flavor to environmental efforts in Vermont’s Lake Champlain region."
In 2003, Ben and Jerry's launched "a project with the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems that focuses on developing On-Farm Assessment Tools for dairy farmers."

A One-Hour Visit! Won't there be lines around the corner to get in? I know if I was in the area that day I would be rolling over toes to get to the front of the line, saying 'excuse me, excuse me.' Enjoy All you Ann Arborites and Ypsi's.
