Amy Vanderbilt offers this helpful example of a clear note one might write for a servant:
"Emma--
When you do the silver today, will you use a little brush on the raised design so that no polish remains? It helps, too, as you know, if you wash it afterwards in hot water and suds before shining it. I am anxious to have it look especially nice tonight as I am having guests.
Also, while you are working with the polish, will you be sure to go over the light switches and bathroom faucets and soap recesses."
--Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette, 1952.
Amy is so wondrously informative for me on how to comport myself and be sure I am practicing proper etiquette in my daily life. If not for this sample note, I do not know how I would address the cleaning of silver with my maid.

You know, don't you, that we have a full set of 'silver'ware, - Fredricksburg pattern if I remember right, that has been in our hallway closet for over twenty years without use. Now I too will know how to address the 'maid' when it is to be polished! Thank YOU Teapot.
oh to leave a note for a maid ...
instead of an email to "fill in the blank".
