Author Nevada Barr will offer a book signing beginning at 4 pm Saturday, April 5 at Nicola's Books in Ann Arbor. Interested visitors are advised to call ahead, 734-662-0600.
For the uninitiated, Barr is the author of the wonderful Anna Pigeon series with each book set in a new National Park. Readers have the pleasure, not only of exploring the independent and spunky Anna, but also of being the poor man's traveler, learning about many of our nation's treasures on her book journeys.
I had no idea that Anna existed until I began working the circulation desk at the library. Then, I would have had to have been blind not to notice the number of patrons with Barr's books on the hold shelf. When I finally got a clue, I put myself on the reserve list and tried one of her books. In a fit of focus not seen since reading the Boxcar Children, Hardy Boy Mysteries and Agatha Christie books in my youth, I went through Barr's Books on CD until I had exhausted the library's collection. Still not satisfied, I went to the ReUse Center and purchased a $2 tape recorder to listen to the remaining books on tape.
As an actress turned park ranger turned author, Barr is unafraid to experiment with many different genres as she writes. You never know ahead of time if you will be reading historical romance, a who dunnit or a thriller.
I can't wait to hear the voice of Anna channeled through Book on CD narrator Barbara Rosenblatt with Barr's new book "Winter Study" set in Michigan's own Isle Royale National Park.

"Winter Study" will be her 2nd book on the beautiful Isle Royal. As I recall the 1st one was about a dive under lake Superior.

I love this author -- I've read all her books. I'm glad to hear she's written a second one on Isle Royal -- tho I love Anna Pigeon, A Superior Death, I thought, was one of the weakest books. (The one set at the Statue of Liberty was a close second.)
